See No Afro
The Afro, worn by African Americans in the 1960's and early 1970's, was born out of social protest. Long hair symbolized the untamed (stay in your place pacifistic Negro no longer) and radicalism (I choose not to fit into and resent mainstream America) in expression: at best, anti-establishment and at worst, militancy. The Afro before it became fashionable, hip and creative expression, symbolized: I will not tolerate being oppressed, a non-verbal form of direct protest.
