Gentrification in Harlem
How do you feel about the gentrification/changes occurring in Harlem?
"Mixed feelings but my feeling lean towards the side of aggravation. This stems from the fact that black people are clearly disproportionately affected by this urban development and pushed out of areas where in some cases they were both born and raised because they could no longer afford to live there due to the high costs of living. Plus some people with high income move into the area with feelings of entitlement that the rich heritage of Harlem should change because they now live here."
Has any of the gentrification occurring in Harlem affected you directly or indirectly, and ifso, is it negative or positive?
"The gentrification has affected me indirectly as I have very close family and friends that have lived here for years but can barely afford to live here now. As buildings are being torn down and replaced with expensive high rises, the amount of economical housing that remains is small and for some people non-existent."
